Thinking of Grandpa Steve today. XO
Before Grandma and Grandpa moved up to Traverse City their visits north would always entail a drive out in the country. When the inevitable corn field came into view Grandpa would call out: “Corn, corn everywhere there is corn!”
This would be followed with silence. Until the next corn field came into view… he would pipe up again, calling out: “Corn, corn everrrrywhere there is corrrrrrn!”
Just when you’d think he was done- nope, another corn field- another exclamation of corn wonder!

Totally weird- and hilarious. All of us kids would crack up! The thought of it still kills me. Ha!

Some Words From Aunt Pat.
Grandpa’s Sister, my great Aunt Pat wrote today:
Hi Leigh,
Your Grandfather was my brother. I adored him. Before he married ( hope I have the dates right) and was in the service, he would write and tell me to keep an eye on Hedy for him. I was his spy. He was absolutely mad about your Grandmother.
Also, when I learned to drive, he would map out my route for me so I would only have to take right-handed turns. He thought that would be safer for me.
There are other stories and I will keep writing later.
So glad you sre doing this.
Love,
Great- aunt Pat
Young Steve- 23 or 24 years old. Back from The War.
His dad owned a bar in Detroit on Michigan Ave called, The Circle Bar… Grandpa is seen “working” here. Ha!
I love it!

A note about The Circle Bar in detroit from Aunt Anne:
“I think the story goes something like this: Grandpa McKolay was president of the Toppers union and the teamsters wanted them to join their union but Grandpa said no and teamsters union/Hoffa blew up the back of the bar.”

Still gathering details on this one… wow.
Young Lovers! My grandparents, Steve and Hedy.
Christmas with the McKolays. My dad Stevie is on the far left (looking bummed about something)… Uncle Joe is in yellow saying “CHEESE”.
Who’s that in the middle? Uncle Mike and Uncle Pete?
Aunt Anne sent these in! xo.

Ok- The story about my dad has come in:
All my dad wanted for Christmas was this beautiful, be-jeweled gun and holster set. My Uncle Joe (the really happy one) got the gift instead. My dad was heartbroken (see photo). Poor Stevie!
In the world of birthdays my dad got the short end of the stick- the day after christmas. What this means is doubled up gifts- or two for one gifts- or really crafty ways of torturing lil’ Stevie! Ha!
Hedy and Steve did get my dad the gun and holster set but didn’t give it to him till the day after Christmas… his birthday.
Hilarious! Poor Kid.
xo.
